MOTORCYCLE AUDITS

Vulnerable Road User auditing focuses on encouraging better infrastructure provision for sustainable modes to encourage modal shift. However, while not being completely overlooked, motorcyclists have had a lower profile in this vulnerable use class. This is a fundamental misunderstanding. The dynamics of motorcycles and the vulnerability of their riders make motorcycling an individual mode in the traffic mix that demands separate consideration by auditors. Gaining a better understanding of the safety problems likely to face motorcyclists includes: Common characteristics of motorcycle crashes Hazard awareness for riders The safety implications of motorcycle dynamics and their relationship to road surface properties, street furniture and obstructions Different issues faced by riders in the urban and rural environments M&S Traffic has trained engineers, as motorcyclists to ensure that the biker’s view is considered when inspecting routes, designing improvements or investigating causes of crashes and their solutions.

Road Safety Audits can be undertaken at four stages: Stage 1 – preliminary design Stage 2 – detailed design Stage 3 – post construction Stage 4 – monitoring at 12 months and 36 months after scheme completion The early involvement of safety auditors may have a significant impact on the quality of the final design.
